ISO 50001 enables organizations to implement the Management systems and processes necessary to improve energy performance which includes energy efficiency, energy use, and energy consumption. ISO 50001 certification helps organizations to take a systematic approach to improve energy performance.
ISO 50001 specifies the requirements of an energy management system (EnMS) for an organization to
- Develop an energy policy,
- Carry out energy review after studying past and present energy consumption data,
- Identify the significance energy use,
- Establish design and procurement practices for equipment, system, processes and personnel working for Significant energy use,
- Establish objectives, targets, and Energy Management action plans,
- Identify legal and other requirements related to Significance Energy use.
ISO 50001 does not render specific performance criteria with respect to energy intensity. ISO 50001 can be used independently and also allows integration with other management systems.
PDCA FRAMEWORK
ISO 50001 is designed based on the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) framework. This set of activities under this approach can be briefly described as follows:
- Plan: conduct the initial energy review and establish the energy baseline, energy performance indicators (EnPi’s), objectives, targets and Energy Management Action plans to improve energy performance in line with energy policy.
- Do: implement the energy management action plans for significant energy use.
- Check: monitor and measure processes, the key characteristics of its operations & effectiveness of the Energy management action plan.
- Act: take corrective/preventive actions to continually improve the energy management system.
ISO 50001 certification is applicable to any organization that wishes to continually improve their energy performance.
ISO 50001 implementation leads to energy saving and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. ISO 50001 certification is applicable for all types and sizes of organizations irrespective of geographical, cultural or social conditions. ISO 50001 certification is applicable irrespective of the types of energy used.
Application of this International Standard can be tailored to fit the requirements of an organization - ISO 50001 can be implemented in any organisation as of whole or part of it after defining scope and boundary of implementation.
ISO 50001 was prepared by Technical Committee Energy Management - ISO/TC 242.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
The organization shall
- Establish, document, implement, maintain and improve an EnMS in accordance with the requirements of ISO 5001;
- Define and document the scope and boundaries of its EnMS; and
- Establish & document processes to meet requirements of international standard to continually improve its energy performance.
DOCUMENTATION REQUIREMENTS
The EnMS documentation shall include:
The energy policy;
Energy objectives, targets, and Energy management action plans;
Documents & records required by ISO 50001.
The amount of documentation can vary for different organizations for the following reasons:
Scale & Size of the organizationType of activities;
Competence of personnel
Implementation Benefits Of ISO 50001.
